THE PERIODICALS DEPARTMENT

Periodicals department was set up in 1996. Untill this time a section of periodicals had been functioning in the Library for more than 20 years.
The creation of Periodicals department was necessitated by the special character of work with periodicals, with the introduction of new technologies and specific needs of the users.
Periodicals department provides the users with all the newspapers and journals kept by the library.
The library clientele can make use of the periodicals in a specialized reading room accomodating 60 users. Subsidiary stock of the most often required periodicals - newspapers and journals of the latest 3 years of about 1100 titles of home and foreing journals on the humanities and 125 newspapers is offered to the users. Catering for the mass-reader we have worked out the following card catalogues: alphabatic registration catalogue of the journals (annual), newspaper catalogue of sertain years, geographic, systematic, language card catalogues; the catalogue of new periodicals titles, the unit catalogue of periodicals received by other departments and libraries of the Cultural Centres of this Library.
In connection with the introduction of new technologies in Periodicals department electronic catalogue of the periodicals of the year 1998 based on TINLIB programme was created. In the near future it will substitute all card catalogues of the department.
A part of the current year journals that is in great demand and depicts the Library s Acquisition profile is in open access. The readers have also access to the current home newspapers.
We have equipment for reading microfilms and microfishes.
In April, 1998 INTERNET Centre with 9 computers began functioning in the department. The users have free access to Internet and are consulted on Internet resources, they can also received audio information here.
The Department carries out information and exhibition work: a constant exhibition of new titles is displayed, exhibitions of topical problems and countries are held. Subject lists on periodicals on the fields of knowledge that are in great demand are distributed.
The staff members answer the readers requests ( on the phone 915 - 36 - 39 as well ).
